Why is a dehumidifier important in a house? Why excessive humidity must be removed from the air?

A dehumidifier is important because it helps to protect the residents’ health and their things of value, such as, for example, electronic devices. In fact, humidity itself is not harmful, except for the fact that it provides favorable conditions for proliferation of microorganisms such as fungi and mites. Some species of fungi and mites may adversely affect human health, in addition to damage artworks, books, electronic devices, etc.

Further explaining fungi and mites. Fungi are not animals or plants; they belong to kingdom Fungi and there may be over 30,000 species of them. Fungi are very important in the ecosystem, as they decompose organic materials. Fungi eat everything: leather, paper, wood, metal, your favorite painting or rare books, your leather bag or state-of-the-art TV, carpets, curtains, armoires, etc.; in short, anything. This is their function.

Fungi can be bad for health because they usually have a 30-day life cycle. When they reach adulthood, they release millions of spores (their reproductive organs), which stay airborne in the environment. When inhaled, they can trigger respiratory allergy attacks. The higher the humidity and temperature, the better are their living conditions, and they can proliferate further and quicker. Humans, even the healthiest ones, develop allergic problems when in continuous contact with aggressive agents.

Mites, on their turn, are microscopic animals that feed on human skin. They need humidity as well, but generally, their water supply comes from people’s sweat, as they preferably inhabit beds and pillows. An effective sanitation of the rooms is the best form of controlling mites.
