According to the Brazilian Association of the Industry of Products for Pets – ABINPET Brazil is the 2nd biggest market of pet items in the world. Revenue arising from this market in 2016 in Brazil was of R$18.9 billion, a 4.9% increase compared to 2015.

The services provided in the pet market are initially divided into four segments, namely:

Pet Serv (services, such as bathing, grooming, and others);
Pet Care (accessories, beauty products, and items for pets);
Pet Vet (medicines).
To offer quality products and services to animals, the Federal Veterinary Medical Council – CFMV establishes some principles that all those involved in display, care, hygiene, beauty treatment, sale, or donation of animals by commercial establishments must adopt to promote safety, health, and wellness of the animals under their care. In article 5, item 3, it provides that pet shops shall maintain suitable temperature and humidity in the environment. In addition to it, it is extremely important that the environment is clean and pleasant.
The establishments sell food to pets, which is often stored incorrectly, for example, placed near the ground and along walls that may have humidity. This practice may be dangerous for entailing contamination by deteriorating and pathogenic microorganisms, and causing health risks to the animal.
